"Festivals If you have ever fancied dancing with the devil, head to Tarragona around September 23 and take part in the Santa Tecla festivities, an event which dates back nearly 1,000 years. Although based on the veneration of the city's patron saint, this is largely a pagan festival, where troupes of devils twirl along the streets, dodging a hail of sparks from firecrackers.
Dragons and other mythical creatures lurch through the lanes of the old town accompanied by marching bands, while skilled teams clamber onto each others' shoulders to form human castles, with small children balancing precariously on the top. It would never be allowed in the UK, but no one seems to get hurt. Despite the proximity to the resorts of the Costa Daurada, the festival has remained authentic and attracts surprisingly few tourists. "
