Mumbai: After the dabbawallahs of Mumbai who will be going to Italy for a food conference, it’s the turn of the govindas of the city to go global.
Every Janmashtami, the govindas scale dizzying heights and thousands watch with bated breath as the human pyramids rise up and collapse with practiced ease.
However, next month 11 of them from across Mumbai will be taking their gymnastics across the globe to Spain.
"I haven't even seen Mumbai. I just can't wait to go to Spain,” Janmashtami gymnast, Mahesh Lahane says.
His colleague and friend adds, "We'll learn about their system there, and teach them about our system here.”
Another gymnast, Shrikrishna Pandelkar’s wife has asked him to get her a Sari from Spain.
“My wife wants me to get her a sari but you only get jeans there,” Pandelkar says.
But the only girl in the group, Mohini says she won't do any shopping in Spain. She is more than happy that her family has granted her permission to go with a group that comprises only of men.
"I'll be the only girl there, so they were apprehensive at first, but after speaking to our cooperator, they agreed,” Mohini Sawant says.
The members of the group are very excited about the trip and this time they are holding on tightly not only to each other, but to their passports as well.
Indeed, it took much political muscle power to get the govindas their passports and visas in place.
"These boys come from the lowest class of families. They never thought they would get an opportunity to fly abroad. But I assure you, if we get the Guiness book of Records here, as far as height is concerned, our boys can go to a level to which even the Spanish can't go,” NCP leader, Jitendra Awhad says.
So the long way from Sanpada to Spain, is now within the reach for these young men and woman, who will be leaving for Spain on November 14.
